Reason of Purchase
During the First World War, the USA, fearing that the islands might be seized by Germany as a submarine base, approached Denmark with a view to buying them.

Deal Detail
Transaction was finalised on 17 January 1917 for $25 million. The USA took possession of island on 31 March 1917.
