Establishment of the (First) Spanish Republic
The Republic lasted for about 22 months from the day after the king abdicated in 1873 until December 1874. The period saw the end of compulsory conscription, the regulation of child labour and the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico. It also saw constant tension and inherited wars, until a coup d'état ended it and from 29 December 1874 restored the Bourbon monarchy.
