A Quagga is a South African zebra which has been extinct since 1883, that had a yellowish-brown coat with darker stripes.
resembling the zebra, but striped only on the forepart of the body and the head. It is a subspecies of the zebra and it was known to be an equine mammal. It was found widely in Karoo of Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State in South Africa

With the Dutch settlement of South Africa the quagga began to be hunted in large numbers as it competed with other domesticated animals for fodder. While some quaggas were taken to zoos in Europe, breeding programs were not successful. The last wild population lived in the Orange Free State, the last captive specimen died in Amsterdam on 12 August 1883. Only one quagga was ever photographed alive and only 23 skins are preserved today.
