A sharp needle pierces the wood easily but not a blunt knife although the force applied on both is same, why?

That happens because small area exerts more pressure then a large area exerts less pressure. Force doesn't matter for the piercing in the wood. If the area is small then it will exert more pressure and if large then it will exert less pressure.
