Spain adopted the Marcha Real in 1740, the first adopted national anthem. The Netherlands has an anthem dating back to 1518 but it was adopted after Spain's. Japan's anthem has lyrics that date back to somewhere between 900 and 1185, but it wasn't adopted as a national anthem until 1922.

The Marcha Real is the national anthem of Spain. It is one of only four national anthems (along with those of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and San Marino) in the world to have no official lyrics
