Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was established in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference, when it was decided to place the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England. GMT is an absolute time reference & doesn't change with the seasons.

Now coming to IST, IST is 5 and half hours ahead of GMT means if GMT is 1:00 am then at that time Indian Standard time would be 6:30 AM.
