The story is contained in an epic verse poem composed sometime over the period between the 8th and 11th centuries, and celebrates a heroic period in Scandinavia. The manuscript held in the British Library is Old English, the language spoken in Anglo-Saxon pre-Norman conquest England. The name translates to "bee wolf". It has been translated by several notable poets since it came into focus again in the 19th Century, and filmed.
