Thanks for the query.

Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen better known as Roald Amundsen or simply refered as Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who was the first to conquer the South Pole on 14th December, 1911. Amundsen's started his South Pole Expedition in 1910. On 8th September, 1911 He and his team attempted for the first time to reach the pole but failed due to extreme temperatures. In his second attempt, he and his team comprising of his all Norwegian crew of Olav Bjaaland (champion skier and carpenter), Helmer Hanssen (navigator), Sverre Hassel (dog expert) and Oscar Wisting set out with four sledges and 52 dogs on 19th October, 1911 to reach the pole. They reached the pole on 14th December with 16 dogs about 33/34 days earlier to the other expedition led by British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. Contrary to the unfortunate venture of Scott where all the team members along with Scott perished, Amundsen and his team reached home safely with no casualties.

Amundsen is also recognized as the first person to reach both the North Pole and South Pole.
